Our Solution
“Food is health. Food is national security. Food is job creation. Food is economic growth.”
Agriculture plays a crucial role in food security, supplying the basic products that keep millions of people fed every day. In South Africa, the industry produces a variety of products, from beef and poultry to maize, fruit, nuts and vegetables.
Transforming a country’s agriculture sector can create jobs, raise incomes, reduce malnutrition, and kick-start the economy on a path to middle-income growth.
Umhlaba Produce response to this challenge is the development of a farm that would produce a variety of crops and nuts for local and international consumption, thus creating jobs and opportunities for ownership and driving South Africa’s transformation agenda.
A Problem Worth Solving
Umhlaba Produce
Farming Focus
Utilizing new agriculture technologies such as vertical farming, we can ensure consistent higher yields all year round from a small indoor space whilst removing weather variables. Embracing vertical farming techniques also allows us to rapidly scale as the produce demand grows. Our initial focus will be Microgreens and break through farming for macadamia produce.
Umhlaba Produce Microgreens
Umhlaba Produce Microgreens farming is growing microgreens at a commercial location.Microgreens are vegetable greens (not to be confused with sprouts or shoots) harvested just after the cotyledon leaves have developed (and possibly, with one set of true leaves). They are used as a nutrition supplement, a visual enhancement, and a flavor and texture enhancement. Microgreens can add sweetness and spiciness to foods.
